Company history

Tanaka is a Japanese engineer and inventor, one of the founders of the so-called Toshiba Corporation, which the Japanese called Edison Japan. Born in 1799, Tanaka built the first Japanese steam locomotive and the first warship. After his death in 1881, For engineering works to Toshiba.

Toshiba is a merger between two companies in 1939. The first company is Tanaka Engineering Works, the first Japanese company to manufacture telegraph equipment and was founded by Tanaka in 1875. In 1904 it was renamed Shibaura Engineering Works. In 1970, the company established a group of subsidiaries including Toshiba International, Toshiba Electric Equipment, Toshiba Chemical, Toshiba Lighting and Technology, and Toshiba Transport. In 2010, Toshiba ranked fifth in the world as the largest PC vendor after Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Acer and Lenovo.
In the same year it was the fourth largest semiconductor manufacturer after (Intel, Samsung Electronics)
