The company was founded in Taiwan in 1989 by Thong Thong, Ted Hsu, Wayne Hsieh and Mat Liao, all four engineers at Acer. In 1994, Johnny Shih joined the company. During 2004, Asustec produced 4,880,000 laptops, including two million OEMs, for its customers. Asus is today the number one motherboard maker in the world before Gigabit, Asrok and Macy, 6.7. In 2008, more than 24 million motherboards were sold as parent. With 40% market share in motherboard sales, Asus is the world's leading manufacturer. In 2010, Asus part of its business in Bagatron.
