Samsung is transforming from a product-based company to a much more service and one-driven solution, and that requires not only inspired product designers, but an emerging discipline, that of service design.

1969 to 1987: the first years.

​

Samsung Electric Industries was established as a subsidiary of the Samsung Group in 1969 in Suwon, in the southern suburbs of Seoul. Its first products are electronic and electrical devices such as televisions, calculators, refrigerators, air conditioners and washing machines. In 1970, the Samsung group created another subsidiary, Samsung-NEC, jointly with the Japanese company NEC, for the manufacture of household appliances and audiovisual equipment. In 1974, the group expanded into the semiconductor market by acquiring Korea Semiconductor, one of the country's first chipmakers at the time. The acquisition of Korea Telecommunications, a manufacturer of electronic switches, was completed in the early 1980s.

In 1981, Samsung Electric Industries reached 10 million black and white television sets12. In February 1983, Samsung's founder, Lee Byung-chul, made an announcement later dubbed the Tokyo statement, in which he stated that Samsung intended to become a DRAM13 salesman. The following year, Samsung became the third company in the world to develop a 64-kb DRM memory, after Japan and the United States13. In 1988, Samsung Electric Industries and Samsung Semicondition & Communications merged to form Samsung Electronics14.

Samsung Electronics France.

Founded by an association between Christian Paillot and Samsung Korea in 1988, Samsung Electronics France employs 300 people. Turnover in 2007 was $ 3 billion27.

The world's leading manufacturer of magnetrons and monitors, Samsung is primarily focused on consumer electronics. In France, the company holds the first-place volume in the microwave market27, in mobile telephony, monitors and flat screens, and is also present in the field of memory components.

Since September 10, 2010, Samsung has become number one mobile phone sales in France28. In 2013, the Korean manufacturer dominates sales in France with a market share of 50% 29.

On February 26, 2013 the Peoples Solidarity associations, Sherpa and INDECOSA-CGT, filed a complaint against Samsung Electronics France. This complaint was a first in France and in Europe. Following the publication of a survey by the NGO China Labor Watch revealing the working conditions of workers in factories in China, Samsung France is accused of "deceptive commercial practice", communicating on ethical commitments that it does not respect30,31. Following this complaint, a preliminary investigation was opened on July 8, 2013. While the complaint was dismissed in December 2014, the CGT and the NGO Sherpa continue their action and call to appear Samsung Monde and Samsung Electronics France before the court of Bobigny Thursday, December 17, 2015 for deceptive commercial practices33.

LCD and LED tiles.

The second division of the group, LCD, is the production of LCD panels for the manufacture of computer screens, telephones, televisions. Samsung is the world leader in the sector. This activity accounted for 19.34% of the group's sales in 2010, with 172 million slabs sold. But Samsung has to deal with lower prices3. On December 26, 2011, Samsung Electronics announces that it is buying back Sony's shares in their S-LCD LCD panel joint venture (created in April 2004) for 1,008 billion won (€ 671 million) 3

Mobile telephony.

Mobile telephony accounted for 26.64% of sales in 2010, with 280 million phones sold worldwide. Samsung ranks number 1 worldwide ahead of Nokia, thanks to models such as Galaxy S2 or Wave , and also first in terms of selling smartphones (20%) ahead of Apple (19%) in 2011. however, it is interesting to note that Samsung is not ranked in the top 10 most sold mobile phones in the world since the beginning of the mobile phone, while Nokia is present with 9 mobile phone models.

Digital media.

The third activity is consumer electronics, Digital Media, ie flat screens, refrigerators, cameras, printers. Here again, the highly competitive sector weighs on the profitability of the business, which accounted for 37% of 2010 revenue but only 2.8% of the Group's operating profit3.

Samsung Opto-Electronics France.

​

The subsidiary company of Samsung, Techwin, is mainly active in the field of digital cameras dedicated to the general public, and co-developed with Pentax DSLRs.

​

The C-MOS sensor of the GX-20 and K-20D (Pentax) is the result of a 100% Samsung development and realization. Samsung Opto-Electronics France is number three in volume for 2007 (behind Panasonic and Sony).

​

This branch was integrated into Samsung Electronics France as of May 1, 2008.

2008 to present: consumer products.

​

In April 2011, Samsung Electronics sold its hard drive business to Seagate Technology for approximately $ 1.4 billion, half paid in cash and half in Seagate action15.

​

In November 2014, Samsung Electronics announced the construction of a smartphone factory in Vietnam that would represent a $ 3 billion investment16. The plant is planned to be built in Thái Nguyên province, where another Samsung plant opened in 2012 for a $ 2 billion investment16.

In December 2014, Samsung Electronics announced the sale of its optical fiber subsidiary to Corning, an American glass company, for an undetermined amount. This sale takes place 2 months after the sale of its subsidiary in LED17.

​

Following difficulties, Samsung Electronics announces the abolition of 10,000 jobs in South Korea, or nearly 10% of its workforce in the country18. In China, where smartphone sales are even more difficult than in the rest of the world for the Korean smartphone maker, Samsung plans to lay off between 9% and 20% of its workforce according to sources19.

In January 2016, Samsung Life announced the acquisition of Samsung Electronics' 37.5% interest in Samsung Card for the equivalent of $ 1.3 billion20.

In September 2016, HP announced the acquisition of Samsung's printing business for $ 1.05 billion21. In October 2016, Samsung is fined $ 120 million to Apple for patent infringement.22. In parallel, Samsung is in trouble following indications that the Galaxy Note 7, which forced him to stop marketing and massive reminders.

In November 2016, Samsung acquires for $ 8 billion Harman, an American company specializing in audio-visual equipment integrated with automobiles23,24.
